An impressive case study was presented at CiscoLive last week by APM experts from Intuit ("It's Not the Network! -- Troubleshoot Performance Problems Faster, No Matter Where They Are!").
Here are some highlights from their presentation, for those of you who missed it:
- Intuit reported an 80% reduction in troubleshooting cycle times by using OPNET APM Xpert solutions vs. older approaches that relied solely on NetFlow, log, and interface checks.
- Finger pointing between network and application teams have now changed to constructive dialogues based on simple workflows and empirical data.
- Some key use cases highlighted: global network and application performance monitoring, customer experience monitoring, deep dive performance assessments, predictive response time studies, and automatic discovery of application dependencies.
- Example troubleshooting exercises were explained in the presentation, including a high profile issue that was solved by tuning Siebel and Avaya applications. The rapid diagnosis and resolution prevented a prolonged service outage at multiple call centers.

I was present at this presentation. Intuit has done some very impressive work when it comes to application performance management. Their presentation is a good model for how to help end the "Help! The network is slow!" syndrome and move into a proactive practice for improving application performance across an organization. It was obvious from the presentation that their partnership with OPNET has returned huge dividends and saved a lot of time and money.
