This is a question that I am starting to hear from our clients. For those not familiar, OpenFlow is currently the leading architecture enabling Software Defined Networks (SDN). OpenFlow allows a new paradigm for controlling the flow of traffic through a network. It promises dramatic increases in efficiency and flexibility while dealing better with the dynamic nature of modern and next generation technologies like public/private cloud.
The quick answer to this question is YES. OPNET’s APM Xpert suite can absolutely work in an OpenFlow environment. It is largely a transparent
transition.
As you may be aware, APM can use several different techniques to instrument the network and application components including: appliances, agents, remote polling, active testing, and browser instrumentation. All of these techniques can work in traditional or next generation OpenFlow networks.
I will cover each of these instrumentation techniques in more detail in upcoming posts over the next few days/weeks. I will also share some ways that OpenFlow can make APM easier and more effective.
